Life Drawing 13th December 2012 (plus buttons)

Detail of drawing. Water soluble graphite on prepared paper

The last life drawing session this year; our model Martin gave us some excellent poses as always and this time I managed not to cause him too much suffering! I started off with my usual pen drawings and for the longer poses I used the water-soluble graphite. As I had some prepared paper to work on I got a different effect to last session as the paint I use to prepare the paper mixes with the water to make a paste, giving a different texture.

I was also very excited as one of my regular attendees (not sure that's a word) very kindly gave me two tubs full of old buttons. Collected over two generations there are some lovely buttons and I've had great fun already having a look through. You can never have too many buttons!

Life Drawing 1st November 2012

5 minutes, permanent marker

An interesting session again last night. Martin gave us lots of great poses, although I felt rather cruel as he seemed to be suffering in most of them! Sorry Martin. As last session we'd had lots of open poses I asked Martin for more crouched, twisty poses this time, which were great to draw but not much fun to hold.

Very unusually I managed to do not one but two of my drawings on one piece of paper. This is a rare occurrence so to make up for it I did a really big drawing and still didn't fit the whole pose on! In yet another strange turn for almost all the poses I did just one drawing, even the 30 minute pose. I also had a bit of a go with some colour. Not sure how I feel about this but I'm trying to keep experimenting all the time.

30 minutes, water soluble graphite (3 sheets of paper)

I'm really enjoying working with the water-soluble graphite, although I missed my prepared papers this week. You'd think two weeks would be plenty of time to get some paper painted up really but it would seem not! I like letting the water run, taking the graphite with it and I like the more subtle tonal variations that can be achieved.

Magik Quilt 2012 Complete!

The finished Quilt

I'm so proud of my textile group at The Heathlands Project for all the work they've put into this years quilt. It's fantastic to see how far they've come, their level of skill and patience has improved dramatically over the last year and we've produced a really beautiful piece of work. The quilt has been a great opportunity for me to teach lots of different textile processes and I'm really impressed with the finished project. A special thank you to Susan for all her help sewing all the patches together!
